General
The SPP 2520 Infrastructure Priority Program “Research Vessels” addresses emerging research questions and future challenges in vessel-based marine science. Its primary goal is to strengthen marine research by fostering active participation from universities and research institutions and early-career researchers.
The program offers dedicated funding for participation in research vessel expeditions, as well as for the initial analysis of collected samples and data. In addition, it introduces a standardized and streamlined application and funding process for access to German ocean-going and regional research vessels.
The research activities are structured around five overarching themes:
- Ocean in a Changing Climate
- Ocean Interfaces and Biogeochemical Cycles
- Ocean–Lithosphere Dynamics
- Ocean–Biosphere Interactions
- Ocean-Based Technologies and Innovation
Through this initiative, the SPP aims to strengthen the international visibility, competitiveness, and scientific excellence of vessel-based marine research across German universities and research institutions.
