Aims
The program is designed to strengthen and advance marine research, with a particular emphasis on enabling strong participation from university-based research groups. It provides a dedicated funding framework that supports participation in research vessel expeditions, as well as the initial processing and analysis of collected samples and data.

A key objective of the program is to establish and harmonize application and funding procedures for the use of ocean-going and regional German research vessels. By creating a transparent and standardized framework, the program aims to improve accessibility, efficiency, and coordination across vessel-based research activities.
Scientifically, the program is structured around five overarching themes that guide its strategic focus:
- the ocean in a changing climate,
- ocean interfaces and biogeochemical cycles,
- ocean–lithosphere dynamics,
- ocean–biosphere interactions, and
- ocean-based technologies and innovation.
Through this thematic structure, the program seeks to address key scientific challenges while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and methodological innovation.
Overall, the program is expected to safeguard and further enhance the international visibility, competitiveness, and excellence of vessel-based marine research conducted at German universities and research institutions.
