Germany operates one of the world’s leading research vessel fleets, providing essential infrastructure for marine science across a wide range of environments. From global ocean expeditions to regional coastal studies, these vessels enable cutting-edge research and long-term scientific observation.
The fleet comprises several large, ocean-going research vessels—including RV Polarstern, RV Meteor, RV Maria S. Merian, and RV Sonne — which support marine research on a global scale. These are complemented by medium-sized regional vessels such as RV Alkor, RV Heincke, and RV Elisabeth Mann Borgese, which primarily operate in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Together, this diverse and modern fleet forms the backbone of Germany’s marine research infrastructure and underpins its strong visibility in the international scientific community.

Over the past decades, German research vessels have played a central role in advancing marine science both nationally and internationally. They have supported major international expeditions, including the landmark MOSAiC expedition in the Arctic, and continue to contribute to globally significant research initiatives. At the heart of these efforts are research cruises, during which scientists collect samples and data that are subsequently analyzed, interpreted, and transformed into scientific knowledge.
The management and operation of the fleet are distributed across several key marine research institutions. For example, RV Alkor and the new RV Meteor IV are operated by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, while RV Polarstern and RV Heincke are operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). RV Elisabeth Mann Borgese is operated by the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW). In addition, the German Research Fleet Coordination Centre (Leitstelle Deutsche Forschungsschiffe) manages and operates RV Meteor and RV Maria S. Merian, and oversees the management of RV Sonne.
The planning and approval of research cruises are guided by the “Begutachtungspanel Forschungsschiffe” (GPF), a joint review panel established by the DFG, the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), the Helmholtz Association (HGF), and the Leibniz Association. This panel evaluates research proposals and helps ensure that ship time is allocated to the most scientifically valuable projects.
The well-established and highly experienced research vessel infrastructure has been successfully operating for decades, producing a substantial body of internationally recognized and innovative scientific output. The impact of the fleet is reflected not only in the large number of scientific publications based on data collected at sea, but also in its vital role in education and training. Research vessels provide unique, hands-on learning environments for students and early career researchers (ECRs), supporting the development of expertise across a wide range of marine science disciplines and methods.
Research vessels serve as multi-functional platforms that enable a wide range of marine scientific investigations. They support seafloor and sub-seafloor surveys as well as the retrieval of sediments, rocks, water, and biological samples—providing the essential basis for addressing key scientific questions.
Modern technologies have significantly enhanced these capabilities. Advanced bathymetric and sediment echosounder systems allow for increasingly precise mapping and characterization of the seafloor and underlying sediment structures. Benthic ecosystems and associated geological features, such as deep-water coral reefs, are studied and sampled using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), for which research vessels provide stable and highly adaptable working platforms.
Equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and technologies—including autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and ROVs—research vessels facilitate the investigation of marine biodiversity across all scales. This includes organisms ranging from microorganisms to higher marine species, and environments spanning from shallow coastal zones to the deep ocean. These platforms enable both the study of present-day ecosystems and the reconstruction of past marine environments.
In addition to conventional sampling techniques, specialized technologies expand the scientific reach of marine research. While traditional coring devices typically recover sediments from the late Quaternary, seafloor drill rigs such as MeBo allow for the retrieval of much longer sediment cores. This provides access to older geological records and helps to close critical gaps in our understanding of Earth’s history.
Advances in analytical laboratory methods further enhance the scientific value of collected samples. They support the development of new proxies that improve our understanding of the ocean’s physical and biogeochemical properties across different spatial and temporal scales. At the same time, significant challenges remain, particularly in understanding large-scale climate dynamics and interhemispheric connections. Reliable, quantitative data on past variations in key parameters—such as temperature, salinity, oxygen, and nutrient concentrations—are essential for addressing these questions and for improving data-driven modeling approaches.
Germany’s research vessel fleet provides one of the most advanced and versatile infrastructures for marine science worldwide, enabling operations from regional to global scales. It supports interdisciplinary and collaborative research and strengthens the position of the German scientific community in the international arena.
