ECR Measures

A central objective of the SPP 2520 Infrastructure Priority Program “Research Vessels” is the active involvement and support of ECRs. By working aboard oceanic and regional research vessels, early career researchers (ECRs) gain access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure and participate in interdisciplinary and international marine research at the highest scientific level.

The SPP provides ECRs with the opportunity to engage directly in the planning and implementation of research expeditions, as well as the initial evaluation of samples and data. Participation in research cruises allows ECRs to gain practical experience, take on responsibilities within scientific teams, and develop valuable collaboration, leadership, and communication skills. Working in diverse international environments also promotes intercultural exchange and professional networking across disciplines.

The involvement of BSc and MSc students is an important component of the SPP. Through hands-on experiences aboard research vessels, students gain early insights into professional marine research and acquire technological and analytical competencies relevant to a wide range of marine science disciplines.

To further strengthen the professional development of ECRs, the SPP coordination supports participation in scientific meetings, conferences, workshops, and summer schools. Early-career researchers are encouraged to present their work, build scientific networks, and exchange ideas with the broader research community. Where possible, PhD candidates involved in the SPP will also be integrated into local graduate schools and supported through structured supervision and complementary training opportunities.
