Main Coordinator

Prof. Dr. Oliver Friedrich is the main coordinator of the SPP 2520 Infrastructure Priority Program “Research Vessels”. He leads the working group for Sedimentology & Marine Paleoenvironmental Dynamics at the Institute of Earth Sciences at Heidelberg University.

He has long-standing expertise in marine geosciences. His research is mainly based on the reconstruction of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic paleoclimate and paleoceanography using a large variety of paleontological, sedimentological and geochemical proxies that derive from marine sediment cores. Of particularly interest in his research is the evolution of Earth climate, oceans, and ecosystems of the Meso- and Cenozoic (in particular the past 140 million years) and how this information can be used to inform us about recent and future climate change.
